Rust Stain Removal
What causes it
Iron oxide transfers from radiators, hangers, tools or iron-rich water. Iron bonds chemically with fibre, and chlorine bleach oxidises it further and darkens the mark permanently.
How to remove it
- 1Never apply chlorine bleach to rust.
- 2Cover the mark with lemon juice or a cream of tartar paste.
- 3Leave it in sunlight for 30 minutes.
- 4Rinse thoroughly with cool water.
- 5Repeat, then wash normally.
Written for white and colourfast cotton. Acids can etch stone and damage delicate dyes — test first.
