Red Wine Stain Removal
What causes it
Red wine carries anthocyanin pigments and tannins that bind quickly to natural fibres like cotton, linen and wool. As the wine dries, the tannins oxidise and lock the pigment into the fibre.
How to remove it
- 1Blot with a dry white cloth — never rub.
- 2Cover the area in salt or baking soda to pull out moisture.
- 3Flush from the back with cold water.
- 4Dab a 1:1 mix of dish soap and 3% hydrogen peroxide (test first).
- 5Air dry and check before applying any heat.
Written for cotton, linen and everyday upholstery. On wool, silk, leather or vintage fabric, skip the peroxide and have it treated professionally.
