Coffee Stain Removal

Coffee stain on fabric

What causes it

Coffee combines tannins with brown pigment, and milk and sugar add protein and sticky residue. Tannins oxidise as they dry, and sugar caramelises with heat into a stubborn yellow ring.

How to remove it

  1. 1Blot up the liquid immediately.
  2. 2Flush the back of the fabric with cold water.
  3. 3Dab a mix of one part white vinegar to two parts water.
  4. 4Work in a drop of liquid detergent.
  5. 5Rinse and air dry away from sunlight.

Written for cotton, linen and washable upholstery covers. Vinegar can dull natural stone and untreated wood.
